What is the Best 4 Person Backpacking Tent?

1No matter where you’re headed when you’ve got to carry your gear weight is a priority. If you’re looking for a single multi person tent you’re going to have a little more weight to deal with and a little bigger size.

Regardless of the size of your tent you need to look at how well it can protect you from the elements and how much space you can reasonably get in relation to the weight you want to carry. While you can cram 4 people into a 3 person tent it isn’t going to be comfortable. If you’re hiking outside of the summer months you’ll also need to decide on a 3 or 4 season tent. $ season tents have extra insulation but this also weighs more.

There’s also the consideration of whether you want freestanding or not to be able to pitch the tent anywhere or be limited to where you can put in guy ropes. Other features to consider include vestibules, footprints, condensation, walls, and how much it’s going to cost. Consider also if you’re truly in need of a 4 person even if you have three people. A freestanding 2 pole design that has strong aluminum poles supporting it and a durable 75D 185T polyester construction.

The walls are mesh lined and there’s 2 doors and vestibules for ventilation and gear storage. It has sealed fly and floor seams to keep it weatherproof and there are also fly buckles to keep everything on tightly.

It weighs in at 8.5b which isn’t exactly ultra-light but it’s pretty sturdy.

The deign snaps into place and is shock corded together as one system.

The tent won’t fit into a pack so it needs to be strapped outside but it’s easy to set up by one person and has plenty of space.

  • 2 pole
  • Freestanding
  • Rain Fly
  • Polyester

Pros:

It’s large enough for 4, though it will be tight for full sized or larger adults. It’s hard to beat for the price since it’s got some good features and with weighing less than 9lb it beats many similar in heft.

The rainfly goes all the way to the bottom of the tent and as long as you sit it on a tarp it will stay dry. It’s very spacious and tall enough to sit up inside.

Cons:

It’s rather awkward to get in and out with the rainfly on and the poles aren’t really sturdy enough to stand up to strong gusts (30mph+). You’ll also want to consider getting a compression bag to shrink the size when packing it up.

It’s tall enough to sit up in despite being fairly compact and can actually fold into a motorcycle panier once packed down. It’s also wind proof which makes it ideal for bad weather. There’s an indoor light hook for overnight use

  • Waterproof
  • Freestanding
  • Light

Pros:

It really is as waterproof as it claims, though you’ll need to sit it on a tarp to stop it getting muddy. It’s one of the lightest at 7lb but it’s no very roomy so you’re sacrificing weight for space.

It’s very warm with all the vents shut and can be set up quickly. The waterproofing really is the star here because it’s still light compared to others with the extra coating layers.

Cons:

It doesn’t come with the groundsheet, though you can purchase one extra. The tent is pretty short and if you’re tall you will struggle to fit into it laid out. The tent is also eye glaringly bright which can be really distracting once set up.

It’s rather cramped and designed better for 3 people than the advertised 4 if you want to be comfortable.

High Peak South Col 4 Season – $XXX.xx

HIGH PEAK South Col 4 Season Backpacking Tent
Rated 4.9 out of 5 stars from 40 customers. Click the image for prices and reviews!

While this is technically a 3 person tent, like the Weanas it can sleep 4 if you’re okay with being cozy. It’s a very high quality tent that’s 4 season rated so it can stand up to weather extremes like high winds and snow.

It’s pretty light at 9.7lb and uses aluminum poles and guy ropes for extra stability. It’s fire retardent and made of Ripstop Polyester double walls.

The floor is polyeurethane coated for water resistance and there’s a long rainfly that’s also polyurethane treated. There are two doors with storm flaps and two vestibules for dry gear storage.

There are also pockets inside and taped seams to prevent leaks. The design can be set up by one person and comes with a carry bag.

  • 4 Season
  • Waterproof & Windproof
  • 2 dry vestibules

Pros:

With a warm and weatherproof design it’s ideal for going just about anywhere. While it’s a little heavier than your average at this small size it can be divided up and distributed to make the weight more manageable.

The poles are made of solid quality metal to stop them failing when others have. The gear attic is useful extra storage and it’s well insulated indeed for cold weather which would make it great for hunting.

Cons:

The tent has to be pegged down and not freestanding if you want to put the vestibules and the rain fly on. It’s really small which is the problem, it’s rated with enough space for 4 small people but realistically don’t expect to fit more than 3 in here in any comfort even with side sleeping.

It’s also very hot in warm weather despite having reasonable ventilation.

Conclusion

Choosing the best 4 person backpacking tent can be rather difficult since they’re not exactly lightweight at this size and above. The easiest way around this is to distribute the parts after finding something that is reasonably close to lightweight.

If you don’t mind a squash or are really looking for a 3 person tent consider sizing down to save on weight as well. The Weanas is a good all round choice as long as you’re not too tall, since you’ll be inside the glaring color really doesn’t matter and it’s a bit roomier than the Lynx. The High South is cramped and it’s not suitable for warm weather at all, but the real reason it fails is simple space despite being a superior construction.
