Montrail Torre GTX Mid Weight Boots
Dana:
I have to admit, I didn't put a ton of thought into this purchase. I was in Denver, visited the REI store, thought I could use a pair of "real" boots, and bought these. My criteria were: fit/comfort, waterproof, mid to heavy weight and good ankle support. These boots feature a Gore-Tex lining, a Vibram Explorer outsole, gusseted tongue and nice leather uppers that feel more like a comfortable pair of light hikers, although they perform like mid weights. They weigh in at 2 lb. 14 oz. And cost $149 in 2001.

Upside:
Good construction. Waterproof Gore-Tex liners. Soft nubuck uppers.

Downside:
The soles occasionally seem very rigid. From time to time the back of the upper eyelet on the left boot jams me in the shin/ankle area because the tongue has slipped over a half inch or so, baring the back of the hook eyelet to my sock covered leg.
Update: This was actually a veryhard corner of a seam on the tongue. I have since squeezed it a few times with plyers and it seems to have softened up and are performing fine.
