Slumberjack So-Lite
Dana:
My first "real" backpacking bag wasn't perhaps my best choice, but certainly doesn't deserve a "suck" rating either. It actually was a giant step forward from the $6 Mexican blanket I used prior to it. I wanted to go as light as possible and spend as little money as possible. I found this bag at Campmor and liked its diminutive weight of 2 lb. 15 oz. It's rated for a not so cold 40 degrees, but I figured that since I hated the cold, I wouldn't put myself in a situation that was much colder than its rating. That was my only really bad assumption and I can't blame the bag for that. I used this bag exclusively for at least two years during warm summer nights and equally as many 25-30 degree fall and spring nights.* Its 40 degree rating seems pretty much on the nose. The length, rated for up to 6' 10" people, makes it almost a mummy style bag for me if I cinch the extra length on top over my head. Since I'm a cold sleeper, I've moved on to a warmer bag for most of my hiking, but I still on occasion pull this one out of the closet for warm weather camping. Note: Slumberjack seems to have changed the fill and outside color and renamed this bag "Tour Lite".
* Sleeping with thermal undies, a fleece jacket and sometimes a coat.
Upside:
- Very low weight
- Roomy size for tall folks
- Packs small
- Nice liner bag for colder temps
- Unzips fully to be a quilt
Downside:
- Durability  now that I've used it for a couple of seasons, it seems as though the fill can be shifted around inside the single layer construction.
- No draft tube
- No baffles
- If you're a guy, its fingernail polish purple color may cause you to be the brunt of a lot of campfire jokes.
